We
continue 'Vintage Roy' from the booklet series, "Hello, Roy Masters
Speaking”.
Lady:
Hello, Roy. Please bear with me. I've been waiting so long to talk with you. My
problem is my 12-year-old son. Lately I've had so much anxiety. He was in a
mental hospital for seven months for a behavior problem and they released him
to a Home, also for behavior problems because they figured he needed more
treatment. Well, the Home decided they couldn't keep him any longer because he
was acting up so much. Well, I have him home now and I've been trying to act
right...
Roy:
There it goes again! Did you hear what you said?
Lady:
Act right?
Roy:
"I'm trying to act right” which means that you don't know how to be right.
Lady:
Well, I really don't know!
Roy:
That's right! And you're "trying" as a substitute for
"knowing". Have you ever seen little children try to fix a toy, then
smash it in anger and throw a tantrum when they discover they've broken it
instead of fixing it? That's exactly what you're doing. You're destroying your
child instead of fixing him because you don't really know how. You don't know
how to be a whole person or how to relate to your child. That's why he's sick.
Lady:
Yes, I realize that.
Roy:
It's your sickness in him and the more you try to fix him, the worse he gets
because you're "fixing" him according to your ideas of what is right
and that's what is wrong with him to start with. Do you follow?
Lady:
Yes, I do.
Roy:
You tried to make him a good child, didn't you?
Lady:
Yes.
