RADIO CONVERSATIONS WITH ROY MASTERS
SUICIDE
Lady: Mr. Masters?
RM: Yes, you're speaking to him.
Lady: I'm calling because my son committed suicide.
RM: Oh. I'm sorry.
Lady: Because
he was an alcoholic and he had been humiliated and degraded by a girl whom he
had not seen in two weeks. Now he had quarreled with his brother with whom he
worked. And last Friday night-or, last Friday-I spoke with him, and tried to
induce him to go to see a friend, someone else to work with. And then I went
out to dinner, and when my son and I returned, we tried to reach the brother by
telephone-he had suggested that I call him by telephone—and we got a busy
signal. Now, we feel that we should have gone over there, and perhaps we could
have saved him from this act in some way. Perhaps in some way we could have
saved him.
RM:
Well, ma'am, I hardly know what to say.
There are moments when even Roy Masters hasn't anything to say. All I can say
is I'm sorry, and that now is not the time to tell you why
Lady:
But maybe I can understand why-maybe I can tell his brother why. (voice
breaking)
RM: Do you think you want to?
Lady:
Yes. I really do.
RM: All right. Let's talk, then, if it will help
you.
Lady:
It will.
RM: All right. Why do you think he did it? And
what do you think you could have done to prevent it?
Lady:
Well, maybe because..
RM: Not a physical act, obviously.
